On the afternoon of June 14, 2025, VFW Post 8924 conducted a Flag Retirement Ceremony in Celebration of the 250th Flag Day, in order to properly retire worn, torn, and unserviceable United States Flags. Assisting the VFW Post personnel were five girl members: Patriots Janyra Young, Zoey Wilbourne, Ruth Wilbourne, Kenzie Stephens, and Kayla Bowen (event co-coordinator), and three adult leaders: Amanda Bowen, Wendy Young, and Alysa Stephens from the American Heritage Girl (AHG) Troop TX1846 from Palestine.
Opening the ceremony, Post Commander Arnulfo Rios welcomed the assembled audience and spoke to the history of the ceremony. AHG Troop Shepherd Wendy Young then led the audience in a solemn and reverent prayer. Next, Kayla Brown spoke to the history and evolution of the U.S. Flag and its customs and courtesies. Following her, Mr. Bob Whitely from the local Vietnam Veterans of America Post 991, provided a bulge performance of "Taps". Flag Retirement was executed by VFW Post members consisting of CDR Arnulfo Rios, Senior Vice CDR Dael Elkins, Quartermaster Danny Williams, Trustee Garrett Moynihan, and Judge Advocate General Henry Kitchens. Troop TX1846 assisted in all facets of the event to include proper folding and delivery of the 125+ flags, assisting VFW personnel in flag handling, and helping to set up and take down event seating / shelter accommodations, with Miss Bowen leading the girls in order to fulfill the requirements of her Unit Level award.
Finally, the event was supervised by members of the Palestine Fire Department who, once the ceremony concluded, extinguished the fires in the ceremonial burn barrels.
